{"id":3752,"date":"2012-06-07T14:32:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T14:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archive.rockylhc.com\/2015\/elizapark\/?p=3752"},"modified":"2012-06-07T14:32:00","modified_gmt":"2012-06-07T14:32:00","slug":"tale-of-the-tape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.rockylhc.com\/2015\/elizapark\/tale-of-the-tape\/","title":{"rendered":"TALE OF THE TAPE"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><br \/><span>As a young kid, I have vivid memories of my brother telling me about what you had to do if you had a tapeworm \u2013 yep, it caused a few nightmares over the next 50 years but fortunately the therapy is winding down.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>It didn\u2019t help though after reading Laura Hillenbrand\u2019s outstanding book \u2013 Seabiscuit: An American Legend \u2013 a little while back.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>There\u2019s a terrific section in the book that discusses the many travails of jockeys throughout the depression years, including the hoop that was \u2018won\u2019 in a poker game.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>He remembers having the flap of his tent flung open in the middle of the night with some strange bloke telling him to get his A into G because he\u2019d just won him playing cards with the jockey\u2019s now former boss.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>But if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, Hillenbrand\u2019s research showed that some jockeys swallowed tapeworm pills to help lose weight \u2026\n<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">For jockeys who were truly desperate, there was one last resort. Contact the right people, and you could get hold of a special capsule, a simple pill guaranteed to take off all the weight you wanted. In it was the egg of a tapeworm. Within a short while the parasite would attach to a man\u2019s intestines and slowly suck the nutrients out of him. The pounds would peel away like magic.
