Analysis
Hero of an exceptional strong renewal of The Galaxy (G1), Magnus is bred for quality speed on both sides of his pedigree. He is by Danehill’s Champion racehorse and Champion Sire son, Flying Spur. His dam is the speedy multiple Group winner Scandinvia, dam of three other stakes winners, including Group scorers Wilander and Scandiva, and granddam of World Champion Black Caviar and classic winning four-time Group One winner All Too Hard. And it appears that pedigree and performance are being borne out at stud, as Magnus already has four stakes winners from his first crop.
One of the most prolific crosses for Flying Spur has been with mares from his own Northern Dancer sire line. The cross has produced 24 stakes winners 15 Group. This includes Group winner Platinum Kingdom, by Magnus, out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway (by Storm Cat), and there is also a Group One winner by another son of Flying Spur out of a mare by the same stallion. This suggests trying Magnus with mares by Giant’s Causeway’s son, Shamardal, and introducing Storm Cat through Hennessy – broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Flying Spur – and his son, Johannesburg, as well as Catrail, Tale of the Cat, Statue of Liberty and High Yield. There are also Flying Spur Group stakes winners descending from Storm Bird through Bluebird and his son Dolphin Street, which also suggests mares by Lake Coniston.
The Nijinsky II branch of Northern Dancer has done particularly well under Flying Spur, with stakes winners out of mares by Royal Academy (whose son, Bel Esprit, sired Black Caviar from this family), Western Symphony (broodmare sire of a Flying Spur stakes winner), Caerleon (sire of Generous, Tenby and Bletchly Park), Whiskey Road (sire of Strawberry Road) and Serheed (broodmare sire of Magnus stakes winner Missy Cummings). There are also several stakes winners by Danehill line stallions out of mares descending from Nijinsky II’s three-parts-brother, The Minstrel who can be brought in through Palace Music (sire of Naturalism), Bakharoff, Chem and Masterclass.
Daughters of Northern Dancer line stallion Last Tycoon have done very well under Flying Spur producing four stakes winners – including Group One scorers and Casino Prince and Inspiration – and he might be introduced through O’Reilly, Iglesia, Written Tycoon, Bigstone, Just Awesome, Marju and Towkay.

The Flying Spur line is now also beginning to find success when crossed back over Northern Dancer through Danzig, including Magnus’s Group One winning relative All Too Hard (dam by Desert Sun) and Group Two winner Satin Shoes (dam by Volksraad) coming from the Green Desert branch (also available through Cape Cross, Invincible Spirit, Deset Prince and Magic Ring), while there is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Chief’s Crown (sire of Grand Lodge, Be My Chief and Beautiful Crown).
Flying Spur and his sons have sired 17 stakes winners out of mares from the Sir Tristram male line, a cross that gives inbreeding to Sir Ivor. This includes six stakes winners out of mares by Zabeel, a Group One winner out of a mare by Kaapstad, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Octagonal (which suggests daughters of Lonhro, Reset, Savabeel, Don Eduardo and Kaaptive Edition). Flying Spur also has a particularly strong affinity for the Sir Tristram strain through Marauding, this cross producing five stakes winners, two Group One. There are also Flying Spur line stakes winners out of mares by Sovereign Red, Military Plume, Dr. Grace, Grosvenor , El Qahira and Islero.
Like Danehill and many of his Australian sons, Flying Spur has done very well with Star Kingdom line mares, getting 15 stakes winners on the cross. The Biscay branch is particularly strong, through Bletchingly and his sons Canny Lad and Star Watch (who would be very interesting through Hurricane Sky). Other branches of Biscay that have supplied stakes winners for Flying Spur are Marscay (with Blazing Sword being particularly interesting) and Zephyr Bay.
Magnus is sire of stakes winner Prettyhappyabouit out of a mare by Peaks and Valleys (by Mt. Livermore, also sire of Housebuster and Orientate), from the Blushing Groom line. Flying Spur himself has seven stakes winners out of Blushing Groom line mares, three out of mares by Rahy (sire of Fantastic Light), two out of mares by Quest For Fame (sire of Viscount), and two out of mares by Nassipour.
Flying Spur is out of a mare by Mr. Prospector, but the cross back over Mr. Prospector line mares has not been a prolific one for him. However, he is sire of the outstanding filly Mentality, out of a mare by Quiet American, a son of the Mr. Prospector line stallion Fappiano (also sire of Defensive Play, and grandsire of Unbridled’s Song). There are also Flying Spur line stakes winners out of mares by Hector Protector and Woodborough (both by Woodman), Bellotto (bred on similar lines to Gulch, whose son Thunder Gulch should be good here), Xaar (by Zafonic, from the Gone West branch) and Jade Robbery.
Magnus is also sire of stakes winner Magnifisio out of a mare by Key Business (by Success Express, also sire of Mossman), and other broodmare sires and sire lines worth considering here are Century and his son Centaine; Canny Lad; Rory’s Jester; Roberto, including through At Talaq, broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Flying Spur, and Red Ransom; and Halo, particularly via Don’t Say Halo and More Than Ready, and there is also a Flying Spur line stakes winner out of a mare by Halo grandson, Bubble Gum Fellow (by Sunday Silence, also available in Australia through Fuji Kiseki, Genuine and Tayasu Tsuyoshi).
